Chapter 38: Shongguan’s Scheme

“I haven’t drunk, not even a single drop of wine, and am very much sober,” Shangguan Yong An yelled at her when he saw her looking at him in disdain, “Don’t you know? Today Yun Lingxuan had asked someone to give one thousand taels of silver banknotes to Yun Bo. Over there, in the flower boat, in front of everyone, you know how I felt in my heart when others asked how much I got?”

“An’er, you said Yun Lingxuan gave the silver banknotes to Yun Bo?” When Jiao-shi she came, she happened to hear her son’s bellow and could help but ask in concern.  

“Yes, ah! And it was full ten thousand taels, mother, go and speak with Yun Lingxuan, I am her maternal eldest cousin, sole blood-related maternal older cousin. This silver, I ought to always have a share. Isn’t that right, mother?” Shangguan Yongan threw a tantrum as he followed after his mother and asked, with his heart on ten thousand taels of silver.

With these ten thousand silver taels, several beautiful girls in the flower house would all become his; he could even bring all of them to his home. 

Jiao-shi thought that it was unlikely for his son to lie. Besides, this sort of matter, if one were to ask around, it would become obvious. Thus, she looked at her dumbfounded daughter at the side and said:” What is Yun Lingxuan thinking of doing? She wouldn’t give you Tao Di restaurant, yet she gave Yun Bo silver in vain. Is she trying to curry favor with the Yun residence?” 

“I don’t know, mother. This daughter has a feeling that Yun Lingxuan seems to have changed. You better ask around and see if someone is scheming something, inciting harmony among our two families, making Ling Xuan bear a grudge against us!” Shangguan Yunlan thought about it for a while before indistinctly replying.

 Previously, Yun Lingxuan was very good to her, and there were no conflicts. After paternal aunt’s and uncle’s accident, and returning from Jiangnan, why did she change?

When Jiao-shi heard it, she felt what she said was quite reasonable. She nodded her head and said, “Damn it! Who is killing a thousand knives¹ behind our backs and instigating troubles, making Xuan’er distance herself from us in her heart.” 

Their family didn’t have much affection for Shangguan Yuan, but Shangguan Yuan had silver. As long as they clung onto her, there would be more or less some silver every year. But now, Yun Lingxuan intended to break up with the relations with them, completely not considering them as a family. If this goes on, they won’t be able to get even a single wen from the Yin family’s assets. 

Being aware of what her mother was thinking, Shangguan Yunlan curled her lips and said with a tinge of displeasure: “Mother, don’t grumble here. Hurry up and go to the Yun family house and look for Yun Lingxuan.” At present, without Yun family’s silver, she didn’t even dare to go out for social niceties. 

With the whole family relying on the father’s official salary, what can they even accomplish? 

The Shangguan family was different from other families. They came up midway and didn’t have any family properties. Currently, the mansion house they were residing in belonged to the court. If one day her father becomes unsuitable as a government official, this house would be taken back. At that time, her family would have to live on the street. 

In the past, she was close to Yun Lingxuan; thus, whatever Yun Ling Xuan had, she also had them up to a certain extent. Even when she went out to banquets, she was met with envious looks, making her feel that she was a genuine young miss from a wealthy family, nobler than whichever person.

But now, Yun Ling Xuan had tightly guarded all her stuff, rendering her from obtaining anything. Later on, if she had to participate in a banquet, the things she had were all old ones and were already used by her in the past. Those official young ladies would surely ridicule her to death. She was absolutely not willing to face them.
